INTERGENERATIONAL ENCOUNTERS – SUSTAINABLE CARE FACILITY
My project is the outcome of investigation on how to combine and rethink the two institutions of care, Kindergarten and Nursing home. This project tackles themes as loneliness, human relation to nature, home and natural materials. Intergenerational Encounters looks into how we can use architecture to create multi beneficial relations between the oldest and the youngest in our society in Denmark
In the last couple of years it has been brought to attention that many elders live in loneliness. From loneliness arise other problems. This is problems as depression, high suicide rate and illness. But this isn’t the only field that loneliness appear in. Research shows that loneliness and anxiety amongst the youth can be tracked back to the lack of care in daycares and kindergartens. So the lack of hands in the younger years have a big impact on the children’s future development.
Today there are 1.1. mio people in Denmark in the age group 65 +. Future prognosis suggest that the demographic for elders and children will rise further in the future making the problem even larger. These problems will create extra challenges for the Danish welfare state. People who are lonely are shown to be more expensive for the state. The state battles the continuously battle to finance and assure, that people, who can no longer participate in the society, still will receive good care. The consequences for not solving these problems will be be costly for the society and people.
My project is located in Vejle. People is the main focus of my project. As humans we have a big need for interactions, encounters and a social life. After the women entered the working force, institutions have become an essential part of our everyday-life with both parents working.
It have become a public discussion whether it affects the children having lost relation to the older generation. This gap between elders and children is a problem, because studies have shown that they benefit from each others company. Some of the finding are that elders feel more useful and children also benefits evolving a larger vocabulary and acts more calm.
Mapping
The vision of this project is to bring people closer together across generations, which will bring them joy and a higher quality of life. My design have four clusters each hosting different experiences of nature. Nature being one of the key drivers in my design.
Another driver have been to facilitate different encounters between elders and children. Supported by my research I have categorized the encounters into one-one encounters, group encounters and visual encounters, and then specifying the different encounters further in my design. Furthermore restricted mobility and flexibility have also been themes in my project dealing with different users.
